Life skills instructors teach clients how to manage everyday tasks to help them gain independence and move forward in life. Life skills instructors work one-on-one or in small groups to help students or clients with unique challenges develop basic life skills, such as cooking, hygiene, and money skills. The instructor must demonstrate knowledge in the area of instruction, although a specific degree in the area of instruction is not always required. A bachelor's degree is required.
Main Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Model appropriate personal interaction and life skills at all times.
• Teach basic life skills including but not limited to personal interaction, meal preparation, cleaning,
grocery shopping, and household maintenance.
• Lead groups on skills building as needed.
• Provide information about availability and types of services.
• Create incident reports as needed.
• Maintain thorough and accurate records of client interaction, including progress notes, intakes, some assessments and maintain program specific client records such as work/school schedules, curfews.
• Participate in agency wide activities included but not limited to new hire orientation and other training and all-staff meetings.
• Oversight and maintenance of community spaces.
• Participate on client review teams on an as-needed basis.
• Responsible for supporting program services within the milieu. For example, crisis intervention or helping to maintain the safety of the program.
• Knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior and child and adolescent development.
• Perform minor janitorial and maintenance duties (including, but not limited to mopping, taking trash out, cleaning dishes and kitchen, changing light bulbs) while reporting major facility issues through trouble ticket system.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
Licensed Foster Family members will be given preference.
One-year previous experience working with homeless and runaway youth in the arena of substance use, newly housed or mental health required.
Bilingual in English/Spanish Plus Requirements:
Be physically capable of performing all job duties;
Requires ability to lift, transfer, push/pull, maneuver, and reposition 15 lbs. ability to reach, bend and walk.
